Thinning Hair and Early Hair Loss: What the Evidence Says About What Actually Works
You notice it before anyone else does: more strands in the shower drain, a hairline that looks a little further back in photos, a part that seems wider than it used to be. If you've searched anything like “why is my hair thinning” or “hair restoration Henderson NV,” you're not alone, and you're not imagining it. Hair thinning is one of the most common concerns patients bring up at Blanqa Medspa, right alongside wrinkles and skin texture. The encouraging part: for the most common causes of hair loss, there's a real and growing body of clinical research on what actually helps, worth understanding before you spend money on any treatment, including the ones we offer.
Why Hair Actually Thins
Hair loss isn't one condition. It has several distinct causes, and figuring out which one applies to you is the first step toward a treatment plan that actually makes sense. Some of the most common contributing factors include:
• Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss): the most common cause of hair loss worldwide, driven largely by genetics — heredity is estimated to account for roughly 80% of a person's predisposition — combined with the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which gradually shrinks genetically susceptible follicles over time.
• Telogen effluvium: a temporary, diffuse shedding triggered by physical or emotional stress, illness, childbirth, or a major life change; most people regain normal fullness within about 6 to 9 months once the trigger resolves.
• Hormonal shifts: thyroid disease, postpartum hormone changes, and perimenopause can all accelerate shedding or thinning.
• Nutritional factors: iron, protein, or other deficiencies can contribute to diffuse thinning, though this is far less common than genetic pattern hair loss.
• Mechanical and styling causes: tight hairstyles, chemical processing, and frequent heat styling can cause traction-related thinning that is often preventable.
How Common Is This, Really?
If it feels like a private problem, the numbers say otherwise. An estimated 30% to 50% of men have some degree of androgenetic alopecia by age 50, and the same underlying process is just as real, if less openly discussed, in women, who more typically notice diffuse thinning through the part rather than a receding hairline. In other words, the person sitting across from us in a consultation asking about hair restoration is, statistically, in very good company.
What the Research Shows
Blanqa's Hair Restoration service uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP): a small sample of the patient's own blood is processed to concentrate platelets and growth factors, which are then injected into the scalp to support thinning follicles. PRP for hair loss has been studied fairly extensively over the past several years, and the findings are genuinely encouraging, though they come with real caveats worth being upfront about.
• A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled 43 randomized controlled trials and 1,877 participants and found that “activated” PRP (processed with an activating agent before injection) significantly increased hair density and reduced recurrence of hair loss compared with placebo, with improved clinical satisfaction — though it did not significantly improve hair thickness. • A smaller 2023 meta-analysis of 9 randomized controlled trials (238 patients) found PRP significantly improved hair density at both 3 and 6 months compared with placebo, but the increases in hair count and hair diameter compared to baseline did not reach statistical significance — a reminder that not every outcome measure moves by the same amount. • Both reviews reported PRP as generally well-tolerated, with the most common side effects being mild — injection-site pain, redness, or swelling — and no serious adverse events identified.
• For context, the longer-established FDA-approved options for androgenetic alopecia, topical minoxidil and oral finasteride, have decades of data behind them: finasteride reduces scalp DHT by roughly two-thirds and produces at least partial regrowth in about two-thirds of men who use it, though it works better at the crown than at a receding hairline and only maintains results with continued daily use. The honest summary: PRP has a real, measurable effect on hair density in clinical trials, but it is not a cure. Results vary by protocol and session count, and the evidence is strongest for early-to-moderate androgenetic (pattern) hair loss — not scarring alopecia, active alopecia areata, or hair loss from an unaddressed medical condition. Broader hair-loss research suggests combining treatments with different mechanisms tends to outperform any single approach, which is why many patients pair in-office PRP with a daily topical minoxidil routine — though most of that specific combination research focuses on medications rather than PRP itself, so we treat that as a reasonable extension of the evidence, not a proven combination.
Is PRP Hair Restoration Right for You?
PRP isn't the right fit for everyone, and a good consultation should tell you honestly whether it's likely to help in your specific case.
• Good candidates: people with early-to-moderate androgenetic (pattern) hair loss who still have miniaturized but present follicles, rather than areas that have been completely bald for years.
• Also often appropriate: diffuse thinning related to telogen effluvium, once the underlying trigger (illness, major stress, postpartum recovery) has resolved, to help support regrowth.
• Not ideal for: scarring (cicatricial) alopecia, active alopecia areata flares, or hair loss from an unaddressed medical cause such as untreated thyroid disease — these need evaluation, and where possible treatment, first.
• Worth discussing at consultation: current use of blood thinners, an active scalp infection or psoriasis at the injection site, or a known platelet or clotting disorder.
• Realistic expectations matter: PRP is a supportive, evidence-backed tool for slowing thinning and improving density, not a substitute for surgical hair transplantation in someone with advanced, long-standing baldness.
What to Expect: A Realistic Timeline
• Initial series: most protocols use 3 to 4 monthly sessions to start.
• Early signs: reduced shedding is often the first thing patients notice, sometimes within 6 to 8 weeks.
• Density changes: the research above measured meaningful density improvements at the 3- and 6-month marks, which is a realistic window for judging whether it's working for you.
• Maintenance: because PRP doesn't change your underlying genetics or hormone levels, most patients continue with maintenance sessions roughly every 3 to 6 months to sustain results.
• Ongoing evaluation: if a course of PRP isn't producing meaningful change by around 6 months, that's the point to revisit the plan with your provider rather than continuing indefinitely.
